What Your Experience Will Be
What You Will Learn
THE SEA - THE GREEKS -THE CIVILAZATION
During this special journey, you have the chance to learn why the most well-known ancient civilizations were developed here, why Delos was considered the center of the world, why the Aegean sea was the most important trading crossroad as well as how the ancient sailors travelled.
Here is where man first attempted to travel through the aquatic paths of the sea. Long before the invention of writing, depictions of boats and travels were engraved on rocks and caves. And in the most untamed and enchanting sea of the world, the Aegean, great civilizations were born : the Cycladic, the Minoan, and the Mycenaean. Civilizations that glorified travel, contact, knowing the unknown – the dangerous and fascinating at once – the need to exchange and impose, the search, the exploration of new horizons, the restlessness of the human mind that can’t be appeased. In this part of the world called the East Mediterranean, the first great civilizations were born. Here, man conceived his being and the world for the first time, here he stood up on his two legs and raised his head to see God, here his most remarkable creations were made.
THE HEROES - THE MYTHS - THE HISTORY
The most famous myths of the world like the war of Troy, the expedition of the Argonauts, Jason and Media, Hercules and Thisseas, are all sea journeys. Journeys that speak of a land of heroes and their achievements, their passions, the eternal struggle of man with himself, for the conquest of knowledge, life and death.
In the Aegean, the entire civilization, its myths, its beliefs, and faiths are connected to the sea. In the trails of these myths and travels, we will sail the Greek seas once more, seeking the ports and the journeys of the most famous and storm tossed hero, wanderer and searcher of the eternal Ithaka, the everlasting destination of the Man, Ulysses.
DELOS - the sacred island
According to mythology, Delos was the birthplace of Apollo, the god of daylight and of music, and his twin sister Artemis, the goddess of night light and hunting. The sanctuary dedicated to Apollo and Artemis surrounded by a Hellenic city of about 30,000 inhabitants, the monuments, and impressive mosaics from the Archaic, the Classical, and the Hellenistic periods are certainly worth exploring. Delos was inhabited between 2500 and 69 BC, and was a famous religious center as well as a major commercial center. It was proclaimed a tax-free port and due to its exceptionally favorable geographical location, became the hub of the transit trade between the eastern and western, and northern and southern Mediterranean. In 1990 the whole island of Delos was designated a World Cultural Property and is protected by UNESCO.Visit the museum and walk up Mount Kynthos, which at 367 feet (112 meters) provides stunning views of the surrounding Cycladic islands.
